Space Relationship of India with Neighbouring Countries
India occupies a pivotal position in South Asia, extending from 8 degrees 4 minutes North to 37 degrees 6 minutes North latitude and from 68 degrees 7 minutes East to 97 degrees 25 minutes East longitude. The Tropic of Cancer at 23.5 degrees North passes roughly through the middle of the country, dividing it into a tropical southern half and a subtropical northern half. The total area of India is approximately 3.287 million square kilometres, making it the seventh largest country in the world by area and accounting for about 2.4 percent of the world's total land area. The country spans about 3,214 kilometres from north to south and about 2,933 kilometres from east to west, creating a time difference of approximately 1 hour 45 minutes between the eastern and western extremities. To reduce administrative inconvenience, a standard meridian of 82 degrees 30 minutes East, passing through Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, has been adopted as Indian Standard Time, which is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.
India is bounded to the northwest by Pakistan and Afghanistan, to the north by China (Tibet), Nepal, and Bhutan, and to the east by Bangladesh and Myanmar. To the south, the country is flanked by the Palk Strait and the Gulf of Mannar, which separate it from Sri Lanka, and by the Indian Ocean. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal bring India geographically close to Indonesia and Thailand to the southeast. The Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea lie about 300 kilometres off the Kerala coast. India's total land frontier is approximately 15,200 kilometres, and its coastline, including the mainland and island territories, extends for about 7,516 kilometres.
The geopolitical significance of India's location is profound. India sits at the centre of the Indian Ocean region, with the Arabian Sea to the west and the Bay of Bengal to the east. Its peninsular projection into the Indian Ocean makes it the nodal point of maritime routes connecting East Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia, East Africa, and Europe. The Strait of Malacca to the southeast and the Strait of Hormuz to the northwest are among the world's most critical chokepoints for international trade, and India's position allows it to monitor both flanks. India shares its longest land boundary with Bangladesh (approximately 4,156 kilometres) followed by China (approximately 3,488 kilometres), Pakistan (approximately 3,323 kilometres), Nepal (approximately 1,751 kilometres), Myanmar (approximately 1,643 kilometres), Bhutan (approximately 699 kilometres), and Afghanistan (approximately 106 kilometres, currently under dispute). The Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir and the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh represent contested boundaries whose resolution remains geopolitically significant.
Geological Structure of India
The geological structure of India reflects a complex history spanning nearly 3,800 million years, making parts of the Peninsular Plateau among the oldest exposed rock surfaces on earth. Structurally, India can be divided into three major geological regions corresponding broadly to the three major physiographic divisions: the ancient Peninsular Block (the old Gondwana fragment), the young Sedimentary Plains of the Ganga and Indus, and the young Fold Mountain Belt of the Himalayas and associated ranges.
The Peninsular Plateau is composed predominantly of ancient crystalline and metamorphic rocks belonging to the Pre-Cambrian era, particularly the Archean complex. These rocks, known as the Dharwar system in Karnataka and the Cuddapah and Vindhyan systems in central India, are among the most ancient geological formations exposed at the surface anywhere in the world. The plateau was once part of the supercontinent Gondwanaland, which began breaking apart approximately 180 million years ago during the Mesozoic era. The Deccan Trap, covering large parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, represents a massive outpouring of basaltic lava during the Late Cretaceous period approximately 65 million years ago, associated with the movement of the Indian plate over the Reunion hotspot. This volcanic activity, sometimes linked to the mass extinction at the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary, produced the Deccan Lava Plateau characterised by horizontally layered basalt flows known as traps (from the Dutch for staircase, referring to their step-like appearance on hillsides). The Gondwana rock systems, deposited during the Upper Paleozoic to Lower Mesozoic eras, contain most of India's coalfields, found in the river valleys of the Damodar, Mahanadi, Son, Godavari, and Wardha.
The Northern Plains are geologically young, formed by the deposition of sediments eroded from the rising Himalayas and transported by the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra river systems. The depth of alluvial sediments beneath the plains is enormous, ranging from several hundred metres near the foothills to about 8,000 metres in the deeper portions of the Gangetic basin, reflecting the prolonged uplift of the Himalayas and the corresponding subsidence of the foredeep basin. The foredeep or foreland basin that accumulated these sediments was formed as the Indian plate subducted beneath the Asian plate, causing the crust in front of the rising Himalayas to sag under the weight of the mountain belt.
The Himalayas were formed through the process of continent-continent collision between the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate, which began approximately 50 to 55 million years ago during the Eocene epoch. Before the collision, the two continental masses were separated by the Tethys Sea, whose sediments were folded, faulted, and uplifted to form the Himalayas and associated ranges. The folding and faulting continues today, making the Himalayan region seismically very active. The Main Central Thrust, the Main Boundary Fault (or Thrust), and the Himalayan Frontal Fault are the three major structural fault lines that define the successive thrust sheets of the Himalayan orogen. The oldest rocks of the Himalayas are found in the Greater Himalayas, while the youngest occur in the Siwaliks, reflecting the progressively younger deformation toward the south as the Indian plate continues to underthrust the Eurasian plate.
Physiographic Regions of India: Overview
India is conventionally divided into six major physiographic regions: the Himalayan Mountains, the Northern Plains, the Peninsular Plateau, the Coastal Plains, the Islands, and the Thar Desert (sometimes included within the Northern Plains). Each region has distinct geological characteristics, relief features, drainage patterns, soils, and associated human geography. The Himalayan Mountains include the trans-Himalayan ranges to the north and the eastern hill ranges including those of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram.
The Himalayan Mountains
The Himalayas extend in a great arc from the Indus Gorge in the northwest to the Brahmaputra Gorge in the northeast, spanning approximately 2,500 kilometres in length and 200 to 400 kilometres in width. The mountain system comprises several parallel ranges arranged from north to south, each with distinct elevational, climatic, and geological characteristics. The average elevation of the Himalayas increases from west to east, and the snowline is lower in the west and higher in the east due to the greater influence of the monsoon in the east. The Himalayas act as the most important physical barrier in the Indian subcontinent, preventing the cold Central Asian winds from entering the subcontinent in winter and trapping the moisture-laden monsoon winds, forcing orographic rainfall over the plains and the southern slopes of the mountains.
The Trans-Himalaya or Tethys Himalaya lies to the north of the Great Himalayas and includes the Karakoram Range, the Ladakh Range, and the Zaskar Range. The Karakoram, sometimes called the third pole, contains the world's second highest peak (K2 or Godwin Austen, 8,611 metres) and some of the world's largest glaciers outside the polar regions, including the Siachen and Baltoro glaciers. The Ladakh plateau, lying between the Ladakh and Zaskar ranges, is a cold desert at an average elevation of about 3,500 metres, receiving less than 100 millimetres of rainfall annually because it lies in the rain shadow of the Great Himalayas. The Indus River rises in Tibet and flows northwest through Ladakh before turning sharply south to enter Pakistan.
The Great Himalayas or Himadri form the innermost and the highest of the Himalayan ranges, maintaining an average elevation of about 6,000 metres. The snowline in this zone lies between 4,500 and 6,000 metres depending on aspect and location. The Great Himalayas contain the world's highest peaks, including Mount Everest (8,849 metres, on the Nepal-China border), Kanchenjunga (8,586 metres, on the India-Nepal border and the highest peak wholly within India's territory), Makalu, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Nanga Parbat (8,126 metres, known as the Killer Mountain, in Pakistan-administered Kashmir). The Great Himalayas are composed of ancient crystalline rocks that were uplifted during the Himalayan orogeny. Glaciers are numerous and serve as the source of the major Himalayan river systems. The valleys of the Great Himalayas are narrow gorges cut by antecedent rivers that predate the Himalayan uplift and have maintained their courses by downward cutting at a rate faster than the rising of the mountains.
The Lesser Himalayas or Himachal lie to the south of the Great Himalayas, at an average elevation of 1,000 to 4,500 metres. This zone contains important valleys and hill stations, including the Kangra and Kullu valleys in Himachal Pradesh, the Kashmir Valley, and the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The Kashmir Valley, lying at an elevation of about 1,580 metres, is one of the most fertile and scenic valleys in the world, drained by the Jhelum River. The Pir Panjal Range is the outermost range of the Lesser Himalayas in Jammu and Kashmir. Important hill stations including Shimla, Mussoorie, Nainital, Darjeeling, and Shillong are located in this zone. The Duns or Doons are the longitudinal valleys lying between the Great Himalayas and the Lesser Himalayas, of which the Dehradun in Uttarakhand is the most prominent.
The Outer Himalayas or Shiwalik Hills form the southernmost and youngest range of the Himalayan system, extending discontinuously from the Potwar Plateau in Pakistan to Assam in the east. Elevations range from 900 to 1,500 metres. The Shiwaliks are composed of Miocene to Pleistocene conglomerates, sandstones, and clays derived from the erosion of the rising Himalayas and deposited in the foredeep. The Terai is a marshy strip of low-lying land lying between the Shiwaliks and the Northern Plains, characterised by tall grass, forests, and wildlife. The Bhabar is a narrow strip immediately south of the Shiwaliks where the streams emerging from the mountains deposit their coarse alluvial material, causing many streams to become subterranean. Between the Lesser Himalayas and the Shiwaliks lie the Dun valleys (called Duar in Bengal and Assam), which are important agricultural and human settlement zones including the Patli Dun, Kotli Dun, and Dehra Dun.
The Eastern Hill Ranges, sometimes called the Purvanchal, extend along the northeastern and eastern frontier of India through Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya. The Patkai Hills, Naga Hills, Manipur Hills, Lushai or Mizo Hills, and Tripura Hills are the major ranges. These hills form the watershed between the Brahmaputra drainage and the rivers flowing into Myanmar and Bangladesh. The Meghalaya or Shillong Plateau is a distinct geological feature, being an outlier of the Peninsular Block separated from it by the Rajmahal-Garo gap and lifted by fault action. It receives among the highest rainfall in the world at Cherrapunji (Sohra) and Mawsynram due to the funnel-like topography that concentrates the Bay of Bengal monsoon current.
The Northern Plains
The Northern Plains, also called the Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra Plains, form a vast depositional plain extending from Punjab in the west to Assam in the east, with a total area of about 700,000 square kilometres. The plains are among the most extensive and fertile alluvial plains in the world, formed by the deposition of material eroded from the Himalayas and the Peninsular Plateau and transported by the Indus, Ganga, Yamuna, and Brahmaputra river systems and their numerous tributaries. The depth of alluvium ranges from about 1,300 metres in Punjab to about 8,000 metres in the Gangetic trough, testifying to the enormous volume of sediment transported over millions of years.
The plains can be subdivided into four sections from west to east. The Punjab-Haryana Plains, drained by the five rivers of the Indus system (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej) and their tributaries, form the western portion. Most of the Punjab plains lie in Pakistan, with the Indian portion including Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh. The Rajasthan Plains to the southwest of the Punjab Plains merge into the Thar Desert. The Ganga Plains, stretching from the Yamuna-Sutlej divide in the west to the Bengal delta in the east, are subdivided into the Upper Ganga Plains (Uttar Pradesh and Delhi), the Middle Ganga Plains (Bihar and parts of Uttar Pradesh), and the Lower Ganga Plains (West Bengal). The Brahmaputra Plains in Assam, drained by the Brahmaputra River, are characterised by numerous sand bars, shifting channels, and the world's largest river island, Majuli.
The alluvial soils of the plains are classified into two major types based on age. Bhangar is the older alluvium, found above the flood level, characterised by a hard calcareous nodule layer called kankar, relatively coarser texture, and greater maturity. Khadar is the newer alluvium, found in the active floodplains and lower terraces, deposited annually during floods, finer-textured, more fertile, and renewed each year by fresh deposition. The doabs, the interfluves between rivers, are the most intensively cultivated zones in the plains. The Bhabar zone at the foothills is a narrow belt of highly porous, gravelly soil where streams become subterranean. Immediately south of the Bhabar, the underground streams re-emerge to form the marshy Terai zone, which historically supported thick forests and has been extensively cleared for cultivation since independence.
The Deltaic Plains of Bengal, formed by the combined delta of the Ganga and Brahmaputra (the Sundarbans), are among the world's largest and most active deltas. The Sundarbans (meaning beautiful forests) cover approximately 10,000 square kilometres across India and Bangladesh and constitute the world's largest mangrove forest. They are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Tiger Reserve, home to the Bengal tiger adapted to swimming between islands. The delta is characterised by distributaries, tidal creeks, mudflats, and extensive mangrove vegetation.
The Peninsular Plateau
The Peninsular Plateau is the oldest and most stable landmass in India, forming the core of the Indian plate. It covers approximately 16 lakh square kilometres and lies at an average elevation of 600 to 900 metres above sea level. The plateau is bounded on the west by the Western Ghats (Sahyadri), on the east by the Eastern Ghats, on the north by the Vindhya-Satpura ranges, and tapers southward to Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari). The Central Highlands lie to the north of the Narmada River, and the Deccan Plateau lies to the south. The plateau is characterised by a gentle eastward tilt, which is why most of the major Peninsular rivers drain into the Bay of Bengal rather than the Arabian Sea.
The Central Highlands occupy the northern part of the peninsula between the Aravalli Range in the northwest and the Vindhyas and Satpura ranges in the south. The Malwa Plateau, drained by the Chambal, Betwa, and Ken rivers (tributaries of the Yamuna), lies in this zone. The Bundelkhand Plateau and the Chhattisgarh or Mahanadi Basin are also part of the Central Highlands. The Chota Nagpur Plateau, rising to about 1,000 metres and drained by the Damodar, Subarnarekha, and Barakar rivers, is the most mineral-rich region of the plateau, containing vast reserves of coal, iron ore, manganese, copper, and bauxite in a zone extending across Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal, sometimes called the Ruhr of India.
The Deccan Plateau proper occupies the triangular portion of the peninsula south of the Vindhyas. It is bounded on the west by the Western Ghats, which form a continuous escarpment rising abruptly from the narrow Konkan coastal plain, and on the east by the Eastern Ghats, which are discontinuous, lower, and dissected. The Deccan Trap occupies large portions of the northwestern Deccan, covering Maharashtra, Gujarat, parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. The lava flows produced the characteristically black or regur soil (cotton soil) through weathering of basalt, which retains moisture and is extremely fertile. The Deccan rivers generally flow eastward from the Western Ghats to the Bay of Bengal.
The Aravalli Range is the oldest fold mountain in India, running from Gujarat in the southwest to Delhi in the northeast, a distance of about 800 kilometres. Their age (Pre-Cambrian, about 570 million years) has reduced them through prolonged erosion to a series of low, discontinuous ridges rarely exceeding 1,000 metres, with Guru Shikhar in Rajasthan the highest point at 1,722 metres. The Aravallis serve as a critical watershed, separating the Indus drainage system from the Ganga drainage system, and historically acted as a barrier between the wet eastern Rajasthan and the dry Thar Desert to the west. Mount Abu at 1,220 metres is the only hill station in Rajasthan.
The Vindhya Range and the Satpura Range form the northern boundary of the Deccan Plateau and the watershed between the Ganga drainage (north) and the Deccan drainage (south). The Narmada River flows in a rift valley between the Vindhyas to the north and the Satpuras to the south, draining westward into the Gulf of Khambhat (Cambay) in Gujarat, one of the very few Peninsular rivers draining into the Arabian Sea. The Tapti or Tapi also flows westward through a rift valley parallel to the Narmada. The Satpura Range rises to its highest point at Dhupgarh (1,350 metres) in Madhya Pradesh.
The Western Ghats (Sahyadri) run continuously for about 1,600 kilometres along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau from the Tapti River in the north to Kanyakumari in the south, rarely broken except at the Palakkad (Palghat) Gap in Kerala, which serves as the natural corridor between the southwest coast and the Tamil Nadu plateau and is used by major road and rail routes. The Western Ghats rise to significant heights, with Anai Mudi in Kerala at 2,695 metres being the highest peak in peninsular India and the highest point south of the Himalayas outside the northeastern hill ranges. Doddabetta (2,637 metres) in the Nilgiri Hills is the second highest. The Western Ghats receive very heavy rainfall on their windward western slopes (Cherrapunji-like rainfall in parts of the Konkan and Kerala coast), while their leeward eastern slopes lie in a rain shadow. The Ghats are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's eight hotspots of biodiversity. The Shola forests of the Nilgiris, Anamalais, and Palani Hills are unique montane ecosystems.
The Eastern Ghats are discontinuous, lower (averaging 600 metres), and more eroded than the Western Ghats. They run roughly parallel to the eastern coast but are cut through by the major Peninsular rivers (Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, Kaveri) that drain into the Bay of Bengal. Important ranges within the Eastern Ghats include the Javadi Hills, Shevaroy Hills, Nallamala Hills, and the hills of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. Mahendragiri in Odisha (1,501 metres) is among the higher peaks. The absence of a continuous scarp and the penetration of rivers through the Eastern Ghats make the transition to the coastal plain much more gradual on the east than on the west.
Coastal Plains of India
India has two coastal plains flanking the peninsular plateau: the Western Coastal Plain along the Arabian Sea and the Eastern Coastal Plain along the Bay of Bengal. These plains differ significantly in their width, character, drainage, and soil types.
The Western Coastal Plain extends from the Rann of Kutch in the north to Kanyakumari in the south, a distance of about 1,500 kilometres. It is narrow, ranging from 10 to 25 kilometres in width, except in Gujarat and parts of Kerala where it widens. The plain is divided into four sections from north to south: the Kutch and Kathiawar or Saurashtra coast in Gujarat, the Konkan Coast in Maharashtra and Goa (characterised by a rocky shoreline, cliffs, and small estuaries), the Kanara Coast in Karnataka, and the Malabar Coast in Kerala (characterised by lagoons called Kayals, the most famous being the Vembanad Kayals, and backwaters that form the Kerala Backwaters network). The backwaters of Kerala, totalling about 900 kilometres of navigable waterways, are formed because the rivers and streams debouching into the Arabian Sea have built up barrier bars at their mouths, trapping the water behind them. The Malabar coast receives very heavy rainfall and is characterised by dense tropical forests and spice cultivation. Coconut palms are ubiquitous along this coast.
The Eastern Coastal Plain, also called the Coromandel Coast in its southern section, is wider than the western plain, ranging from 100 to 130 kilometres, and more regular. It is divided into three sections: the Northern Circars (from the Mahanadi delta to the Krishna delta, covering Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh), the Coromandel Coast (from the Krishna delta to Kanyakumari, covering southern Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu), and the Utkal or Odisha Coast in the north. Large river deltas characterise the eastern coastal plain, including the deltas of the Mahanadi, Godavari, Krishna, and Kaveri. The Chilika Lake in Odisha, the largest coastal lagoon in India and one of the largest in Asia, lies along this coast and is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance. The Pulicat Lake on the Andhra-Tamil Nadu border is another important coastal lagoon. The eastern coast is more exposed to cyclones originating in the Bay of Bengal than the western coast, and the absence of a continuous offshore reef or barrier makes it more vulnerable.
Thar Desert
The Thar Desert, also known as the Great Indian Desert, extends over northwestern Rajasthan and parts of Gujarat, Haryana, and Punjab, covering an area of approximately 200,000 square kilometres, making it the world's seventeenth largest desert and the most densely populated desert in the world. The desert is bounded on the north and northeast by the Aravalli Range and on the west by the Indus River system in Pakistan. The Thar is a hot subtropical desert, receiving less than 150 millimetres of rainfall annually, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. The desert landscape includes sand dunes (locally called dhories or tibbas) of various types (barchans, seifs, and longitudinal dunes), rocky terrain called reg or hammada, and salt marshes (kavir or sabhka). The Indira Gandhi Canal, originating from the Harike Barrage on the Sutlej River, has brought irrigation water into the heart of the Thar, transforming large areas into cultivated land.
Islands of India
India has two groups of islands. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal constitute one group, and the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea constitute the other. The Andaman and Nicobar group consists of about 572 islands, islets, and rocks, of which approximately 38 are inhabited. The Andaman Islands to the north are larger, higher, and forested, composed of folded sedimentary rocks that form the emergent peaks of a submarine ridge extending from the Arakan Yoma of Myanmar. The Nicobar Islands to the south are lower and flatter. The Andamans and Nicobars are seismically active, being close to the active tectonic boundary where the Indian plate meets the Burmese plate. The 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami caused catastrophic damage in these islands and on the eastern coast of India. The only known examples of active volcanoes in India are Barren Island (the only confirmed active volcano in South Asia) and Narcondam Island, both in the Andaman Sea. Port Blair, the capital, is located in the South Andaman Island. The islands have a tribal population (Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, Nicobarese, and Shompen), with the Sentinelese of North Sentinel Island being among the most isolated communities in the world.
The Lakshadweep Islands, formerly the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Aminidivi Islands, consist of 36 islands, atolls, and reefs of which 11 are inhabited. They are coral atolls, formed on the peaks of submarine ridges, and are composed entirely of coral and associated calcareous material. The total land area is only about 32 square kilometres. The islands are surrounded by coral reefs and are particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise associated with climate change. Kavaratti is the capital. The population is predominantly Muslim and speaks Malayalam. The islands have no rivers or freshwater streams; drinking water is obtained from wells and rainwater harvesting. The surrounding seas are rich in tuna and other fish, forming the basis of the local economy.
Drainage Systems of India: Overview
The drainage pattern of India is determined by its two great structural divisions: the Himalayan system and the Peninsular system. The Himalayan rivers are perennial, receiving water from both monsoon rainfall and glacial meltwater throughout the year. They have long courses, steep gradients in the mountains transitioning to gentle gradients in the plains, and carry enormous quantities of sediment. The Peninsular rivers are seasonal (non-perennial), depending almost entirely on monsoon rainfall, have shorter courses over older, harder rocks with less erosion potential, and flow in fixed valleys because the hard Peninsular rocks offer little scope for lateral migration. Most Peninsular rivers flow eastward (because of the eastward tilt of the plateau) into the Bay of Bengal, while only the Narmada and Tapti flow westward into the Arabian Sea.
The concept of antecedent drainage is crucial for understanding the Himalayan rivers. Rivers like the Indus, Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Arun, and Kali began flowing before the Himalayas rose, and as the mountains rose, these rivers maintained their courses by cutting downward (incising) at a rate faster than the rate of uplift, producing spectacular gorges. The Indus gorge, north of Nanga Parbat, is among the deepest gorges in the world. This antecedent character also explains why these rivers rise in Tibet (beyond the main Himalayan watershed) and flow south through the mountains to the plains.
The Indus River System
The Indus River rises from the Tibetan Plateau near Mansarovar Lake at an elevation of about 5,165 metres and flows northwest through Ladakh, cutting the famous Indus Gorge near Nanga Parbat, before entering Pakistan and flowing southward to the Arabian Sea. The total length of the Indus is about 3,180 kilometres, of which only about 1,114 kilometres lie in India. The major tributaries of the Indus in India are the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej (the five rivers of Punjab, from which the name Punjab, meaning Land of Five Rivers, is derived), along with the Zaskar, Shyok, Nubra, and Gilgit rivers in Ladakh. The Indus system drains most of Pakistan, much of Afghanistan, and northwestern India. Under the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 brokered by the World Bank, India has exclusive rights over the three eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), and Pakistan has exclusive rights over the three western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab), with provisions for limited use by India of the western rivers.
The Ganga River System
The Ganga is the most sacred river of India and drains the largest river basin in the country, covering approximately 8.6 lakh square kilometres including parts of Nepal and Bangladesh. The Ganga originates at Gangotri Glacier in Uttarakhand at an elevation of about 3,900 metres at a snout called Gaumukh. At Devprayag, the confluence of the Bhagirathi (which carries the name Ganga from its source) and the Alaknanda marks the official beginning of the Ganga proper. The Ganga flows through Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal before entering Bangladesh, where it joins the Brahmaputra and is known as the Padma.
The major right-bank tributaries of the Ganga (originating in the Peninsular Plateau) include the Yamuna, Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Son, and Damodar. The left-bank tributaries (originating in the Himalayas) include the Gomti, Ghaghra (Karnali), Gandak, Kosi (sometimes called the Sorrow of Bihar for its frequent and devastating floods due to extremely high sediment load and unstable channel), and Mahananda. The Yamuna, the largest tributary of the Ganga, rises from Yamunotri Glacier and joins the Ganga at Prayagraj (Allahabad) at the famous Triveni Sangam confluence. The Chambal River in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh is known for its deep ravines (badland topography) formed by accelerated erosion in its middle course.
The Ganga at its lower course bifurcates into the Hooghly (which flows through West Bengal to Kolkata and into the Bay of Bengal) and the Padma (which flows into Bangladesh to form the Meghna and eventually the combined Ganga-Brahmaputra delta). The Ganga-Brahmaputra delta is the world's largest delta, covering approximately 59,000 square kilometres and built up by the combined sediment of two of Asia's greatest rivers. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (Namami Gange programme) was launched in 2014 to restore the ecological health of the Ganga.
The Brahmaputra River System
The Brahmaputra rises in Tibet as the Yarlung Tsangpo near Mansarovar Lake, flows eastward for about 1,600 kilometres through Tibet at very high elevations, then makes a spectacular hairpin bend around Namcha Barwa peak (7,756 metres) and cuts through the eastern Himalayas in one of the world's deepest gorges before entering Arunachal Pradesh as the Dihang, and then joining with the Dibang and Lohit rivers to form the Brahmaputra in Assam. The Brahmaputra flows westward across the Brahmaputra Valley (Assam Valley) in a wide, braided channel before turning south into Bangladesh to join the Ganga. The total length of the Brahmaputra is about 2,900 kilometres. In Assam, the river maintains an enormous width of up to 15 kilometres during floods and contains numerous river islands and sand bars. Majuli Island in the Brahmaputra is the world's largest river island, covering about 352 square kilometres, and is famous for its Neo-Vaishnavite monasteries (Satras). The Brahmaputra carries the highest sediment load of any river in the world, a consequence of intense monsoon rainfall over a geologically young and structurally unstable terrain.
The Peninsular River Systems
The Mahanadi River rises in the highlands of Chhattisgarh and flows northeast through Odisha to the Bay of Bengal, draining an area of about 1.42 lakh square kilometres. The Hirakud Dam on the Mahanadi in Odisha, completed in 1953, was one of the earliest and largest multipurpose river valley projects in independent India and one of the longest dams in the world. The lower Mahanadi delta is an important rice-growing region.
The Godavari, known as the Dakshina Ganga (Ganga of the South), is the largest Peninsular river, rising near Trimbakeshwar in Nashik district of Maharashtra and flowing eastward through Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to the Bay of Bengal. Its drainage basin covers approximately 3.13 lakh square kilometres. The Godavari delta, formed by numerous distributaries, is one of the most fertile agricultural zones in India. The Indravati, Pranhita, Wainganga, and Sabari are its major tributaries. The Polavaram Project on the Godavari in Andhra Pradesh is a major ongoing multipurpose project.
The Krishna River originates at Mahabaleshwar in the Western Ghats and flows eastward through Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh before entering the Bay of Bengal. Its drainage basin is approximately 2.58 lakh square kilometres. The Bhima, Tungabhadra, Musi, and Koyna rivers are its important tributaries. The Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam dams on the Krishna are among the largest in India. The Vijaywada or Prakasam Barrage across the Krishna is an important irrigation work.
The Kaveri (Cauvery) rises at Talakaveri in the Brahmagiri hills of Coorg (Kodagu) district in Karnataka and flows eastward through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to the Bay of Bengal. Although it is relatively modest in length (about 800 kilometres) and drainage area (about 81,155 square kilometres), it is the most important river for irrigation in South India, sustaining the intensively cultivated deltas of Tamil Nadu (the Cauvery Delta around Thanjavur, historically the rice bowl of South India). The Kaveri water dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu regarding the allocation of river waters is one of the longest-running and most contentious inter-state water disputes in India, governed by the Kaveri Water Disputes Tribunal. The Kaveri River descends over the Sivasamudram Falls before reaching the plains, where the Krishnarajasagar (KRS) dam in Karnataka and the Mettur dam in Tamil Nadu are the major storage structures.
The Narmada and Tapti are the only major Peninsular rivers that flow westward and drain into the Arabian Sea. The Narmada rises from Amarkantak Plateau (about 1,057 metres) on the Maikal Hills in Madhya Pradesh and flows westward through the Narmada rift valley, flanked by the Vindhyas to the north and the Satpuras to the south, before entering the Gulf of Khambhat. It has a total length of about 1,312 kilometres and a drainage area of about 98,796 square kilometres. The Sardar Sarovar Project on the Narmada in Gujarat is one of the most ambitious and controversial multipurpose river projects in India, involving the construction of a large number of dams on the river and its tributaries under the Narmada Valley Development Project. The Narmada Bachao Andolan, a social movement led by activists including Medha Patkar, raised major questions about displacement, environment, and democratic participation in large dam projects. The Tapti or Tapi rises in the Satpura Range in Madhya Pradesh and flows westward parallel to the Narmada, entering the Arabian Sea near Surat.
Lakes of India
India has numerous lakes of varying origin, character, and size. The Wular Lake in Jammu and Kashmir, formed in a tectonic depression, is the largest freshwater lake in India and one of the largest in Asia. The Dal Lake in Kashmir, though smaller, is famous as a living lake with houseboats and floating gardens (Rad or Radh). Loktak Lake in Manipur is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India and is famous for its floating islands of vegetation called phumdis, some of which are large enough to support the Keibul Lamjao National Park, the world's only floating national park. The Chilika Lake in Odisha is the largest coastal lagoon in India, a Ramsar site, and an important wintering ground for migratory birds including flamingoes. Sambhar Lake in Rajasthan is the largest inland saline lake in India and an important source of salt; it too is a Ramsar site. Vembanad Lake in Kerala is the longest lake in India and the basis of the famous Kerala Backwaters. Pulicat Lake in Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border is the second largest brackish water lagoon in India. The Pangong Tso, shared between India and China in Ladakh, is a high-altitude saltwater lake famous for its changing colours and stratified salinity.
Structural and Tectonic Significance
The physical setting of India can be understood as the product of three major geological events: the long stability and erosion of the ancient Gondwana Shield forming the Peninsular Plateau, the rifting and northward movement of the Indian plate through the Tethys Sea, the collision of the Indian plate with the Eurasian plate producing the Himalayas, and the subsidence of the foredeep to form the alluvial plains. These events are not historical curiosities but ongoing processes. GPS measurements confirm that the Indian plate continues to move northward at approximately 5 centimetres per year, continuing to push the Himalayas upward, sustaining seismic activity across the Himalayan belt, and maintaining the ongoing subsidence and sedimentation of the Gangetic plains. The juxtaposition of the ancient stable shield (the Peninsular Plateau) with the young, unstable fold belt (the Himalayas) and the intermediate depositional zone (the Northern Plains) creates the extraordinary diversity of India's landscapes, soils, drainage patterns, mineral resources, and human geographies.
