Technique, Method, and Methodology: Distinctions

Research is a careful investigation or inquiry, especially through search for new facts in any branch of knowledge.

A technique (from Greek technikos, first used in English in 1817) is a systematic procedure, formula, or routine by which a specific task is accomplished. It is closely linked to proficiency and skill.

A method (from Greek methodus, "way of inquiry") is a logical, systematic, and orderly way of accomplishing something a mode of inquiry, a body of skills or techniques arranged in a regular sequence. It involves procedure and techniques characteristic of a particular discipline. Research methods are the behaviours and instruments used in selecting and constructing research techniques.

Methodology (from Latin methodologia) is the analysis of the principles of methods, rules, and postulates employed by a discipline a science of studying how research is done scientifically. It is wider in scope than research methods: it asks not only what methods are used but also why, and what logic justifies their use in the context of a specific research problem. As Mason Cooley said, "Methodology is applied ideology."

Fieldwork: The Foundation of Anthropology

Anthropology is popularly known as a "field science." As Margaret Mead observed: "We still have no way to make an anthropologist except by sending him into the field; this contact with living material is our distinguishing mark."

Fieldwork is investigation in which the researcher stays in or visits the place of investigation for long periods of time, receives first-hand experience, and collects data. The "field" is the readymade laboratory of the anthropologist. Fieldwork methods are used across all four branches:

  • Biological anthropology uses surveys, blood/hair/urine samples, anthropometric measurements, and observation of primates.
  • Archaeological anthropology uses landscape surveys, sampling, studying artefacts, and excavation of remains.
  • Linguistic anthropology uses participant observation, recording of sounds and speech, and interviewing.
  • Social anthropology uses participant observation, interviews, questionnaires, focused group discussions, case studies, and life histories to produce ethnographies.

Entry into the Field

Once a fieldworker identifies the unit (the people to be studied) and the universe (the geographical and cultural area), investigation proceeds through general and specific processes. General processes establishing familiarity, keeping a field diary, learning the local language, conversing about general topics, photography allow the researcher to earn entry into community life. These may be complicated by the researcher's identities (age, gender, ethnicity, class, caste, religion), which may initially create obstacles. Collecting a census early on provides entry into every household and gives respondents an opportunity to evaluate the researcher. Friendships with key individuals open access to others. Once general processes are complete, specific processes begin: understanding the community's institutions, designing and managing an interview guide based on the literature review and initial data, and moving from basic to precise questions, then to case studies and life histories.

Ethics in Fieldwork

Barnes postulated: "Research has an ethical dimension whenever it impinges on creatures with whom we have moral relations." Four core ethical principles govern fieldwork:

  • Confidentiality:: Rapport building enables respondents to reveal sensitive information. The researcher must protect their identities and manage confidentiality when sought. Research findings must never be utilised at the cost of respondents' lives.
  • Informed consent:: The researcher must seek permission from respondents before probing into their lives, inform them of the research's nature, objectives, use of findings, and effects, and make clear that participation is voluntary.
  • Utility:: Information must be used productively for the researcher's work and, where possible, made accessible and beneficial to the respondents' community.
  • Knowledge and its transmission:: Published findings thesis, book, research paper, or report should add to available knowledge and open avenues for further inquiry.

Problems and Challenges in Fieldwork

  • When there is no clearly available role for the anthropologist, he may be perceived as an unwelcome intruder whose legitimacy is questioned. The anthropologist is himself under surveillance.
  • Local elites may begin advising and gradually interfering with the anthropologist's work.
  • When the society is divided into rival factions, confining the study to one group distorts the picture.
  • The anthropologist must observe unobtrusively to avoid distorting behaviour, while simultaneously involving himself deeply enough to understand it an inherent tension.
  • The anthropologist's own cultural background may introduce personal biases into observations and interpretations, which must be consciously managed.

History of Fieldwork in Anthropology

When anthropology was first established as a discipline in the 19th century, scholars depended on reports from missionaries, voyagers, traders, and administrators in distant colonies they were armchair anthropologists. E.B. Tylor participated in one field expedition to Mexico (published as Anahuac, 1861) but his major works were based on secondary sources.

L.H. Morgan (1818-1881) conducted fieldwork among the Iroquois in the 1840s, published as League of the Iroquois (1851), and promoted the genealogical method for studying kinship. W.H.R. Rivers (1864-1922) and A.C. Haddon (1855-1940) organised the Torres Straits expedition of 1898. Franz Boas (1858-1942) conducted his first fieldwork among the Eskimos of Baffin Island in 1883.

The decisive transformation came with Bronisław Malinowski. He conducted three years of intensive fieldwork (1914-1918) among the Trobriand Islanders of Papua New Guinea, stressing: intensive ethnographic fieldwork; participant observation; and communication in the native language. His Argonauts of the Western Pacific (1922) set the standard for ethnographic investigation. He is recognised as the father of the fieldwork tradition in anthropology.

S.C. Roy published the ethnography Munda and Their Country in 1912 the first ethnographic study of an Indian tribe by an Indian scholar. He is regarded as the father of Indian ethnography.

Fieldwork Today

Contemporary fieldwork spans remote populations and urban settings, one's own native community, government and legal spaces, environmental change, media, and the internet. Virtual ethnography research in digital and online spaces has emerged as a challenging frontier, where what is real or surreal is hard to decipher. The essence of fieldwork direct, long-term engagement with people in their own context remains unchanged.

Ethnography and Ethnology

Ethnography

Ethnography is a holistic description of a particular culture at a particular period of time, produced through direct interaction with the people. Settlement patterns, dress, food habits, economic activities, political organisation, family, marriage, kinship, beliefs, practices, rituals, and customs are all studied in detail. Two types of data are required: quantitative data (population, income, household size, material quantities) and qualitative data (beliefs, sentiments, kinship networks, religious practices, life-cycle rituals).

Brief history of ethnographic studies: Herodotus (3rd century BC) described more than 50 peoples he is regarded as the father of Greek ethnographic study. Marco Polo, Columbus, and Vasco da Gama produced travelogues of remote populations in the 15th-16th centuries. Scientific ethnographic studies began at the end of the 19th century. Radcliffe-Brown conducted fieldwork in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1906-1908), published as The Andaman Islanders (1922). W.H.R. Rivers came to India to study the Toda of the Nilgiri Hills; his monograph The Toda was published in 1906.

Ethnology

Ethnology is the comparative study of cultures it uses an etic (outsider) point of view, examines and interprets the results of multiple ethnographies, and makes cross-cultural comparisons to develop theories explaining similarities and differences. Ethnography requires primary data and close interaction with people; ethnology does not require direct interaction and can be based on different ethnographic studies. Ethnography is largely descriptive; ethnology is analytical and comparative.

The history of cross-cultural comparison dates to Tylor and Morgan's cultural evolutionism in the late 19th century, advanced later by Murdock. Ruth Benedict's Patterns of Culture (1934) is a landmark ethnological work, comparing the United States, Zuni, Dobu, and Kwakiutl cultures. Margaret Mead studied Samoa and New Guinea for similar comparative purposes.

Criticisms of ethnology include: ethnocentrism (comparing cultures from the researcher's own cultural framework); oversimplification and generalisation across diverse groups; reinforcing power imbalances by neglecting the voices of studied communities; lack of contextual understanding of historical, political, and economic factors; essentialism (treating cultures as fixed and unchanging); Western bias; and limited representation of marginalised groups.

Data: Types and Sources

Data is any distinct piece of information collected for research purposes. By source: primary data is collected first-hand by the researcher through observation, interview, or questionnaire; secondary data is already collected and analysed by someone else. By nature: quantitative data is numerical or measurable; qualitative data relates to beliefs, meanings, and social relationships.

Secondary data must be evaluated for reliability (who collected it, sources, methods, time, accuracy), suitability (whether the definitions and scope match the present inquiry), and adequacy (whether the level of accuracy and coverage is sufficient).

Tools of Data Collection

Observation

Observation is the precise viewing and recording of phenomena as they occur in nature. It falls into two broad types:

Uncontrolled Observation

Made in the natural environment without external control.

Participant observation is the one in which the researcher participates actively with the group under investigation living and participating in the everyday life of the group as a full member. The observer ensures that normal life is not disturbed, observes behaviour, and tries to understand interactions and relationships in a holistic study of the social group. The observer must act responsibly, seek no special status, and maintain as much objectivity as possible despite close proximity. Malinowski among the Trobriand Islanders is the classic example. Participant observation is considered the "king of uncontrolled observation." Merits: holistic understanding, rich qualitative data, access to tacit knowledge. Limitations: the participant's narrow role limits the range of experience; if the researcher assumes an important role she may change group behaviour; emotional involvement reduces objectivity; covert participation raises serious ethical issues; and the method is very time-consuming.

Non-participant observation is observation in which the observer does not actively participate in group activities, remaining an outsider either with a hidden or revealed identity, but always passive and detached. Example: Clifford Geertz observing Balinese cockfighting. Merits: greater objectivity, less reactive effect. Limitations: surface-level understanding; may miss meanings accessible only to participants.

Controlled Observation

An artificially created atmosphere is set up for observation. Descriptive in nature. More common in psychological and experimental research than in anthropological fieldwork.

Interview

An interview is a conversation with a purpose a face-to-face process of social interaction in which the researcher asks questions and, unlike a questionnaire, has the space to develop new questions to probe further. It is a direct method of data collection, especially useful for small samples, for topics not open to observation (past events), for understanding in-depth reactions of individuals, and for populations where written questionnaires are inappropriate.

By participants: individual (personal) interview with a single respondent; group (focus group) interview with multiple participants useful for domains not yet understood, for studying group interaction, and for populations (such as adolescents) who share experiences more openly with peers than with an adult alone.

By structure: structured interview (fixed questions in fixed order); unstructured interview (open-ended, flexible, follows the respondent's own frame); semi-structured interview (a prepared guide with space for elaboration).

Three phases of an interview: rapport building (the foundation of success establishing a friendly relationship with the respondent); probing (exploratory questioning to obtain information on remote or unknown topics, bringing the respondent back to the topic without causing offence); and recording the response (during or after the interview).

Limitation: the researcher is fully at the mercy of the respondent; lot of subjectivity may creep in; time consuming.

Questionnaire

A questionnaire is a set of questions in a particular form and order, filled in by the respondents themselves distinguishing it from a schedule, which is filled in by the researcher. It is the main technique of the survey method.

Types of questions: open-ended (respondent may write any response); closed-ended (respondent chooses from specified answers, including yes/no). Types of questionnaire: structured (fixed wording and order); unstructured (modified for the situation); semi-structured (mixture); pictorial (alternatives in picture form).

Merits: large coverage; less expensive; easy to plan and administer; preserves respondent anonymity; useful as a preliminary tool for in-depth study. Limitations: cannot reach illiterate populations; low response rate is possible; misinterpretation of questions is possible in the researcher's absence; reliability is critical to data quality.

Schedule

A schedule is a set of questions asked and filled in by the researcher, not the respondent unlike a questionnaire. It allows rapport building before questioning begins. Types: observation schedule (designed to observe specific aspects of a situation, used by non-participant observers); rating schedule (a rating scale to find information about predetermined attributes); evaluation schedule (used for institutions and agencies); interview schedule (containing questions framed for use during an interview, providing space for recording responses).

Case Study

The case study method involves minute and detailed study of a single social unit an individual, group, institution, or event in a comprehensive and intensive manner, to understand both personal and hidden dimensions. First used in clinical medicine. Various methods (observation, interview, questionnaire, schedule) can be combined within a case study. It produces rich, authentic, qualitative data.

Characteristics: descriptive (high detail, studying behaviour directly); narrowly focused (on a limited aspect of the unit); combines objective and subjective data; process-oriented (captures processes unfolding over time).

Advantages: facilitates intensive in-depth analysis; collects comprehensive information that stimulates new research; suitable for sensitive topics; useful for understanding social change and historical experience; allows use of any method; helps in hypothesis formulation; therapeutic and administrative utility. Limitations: open to errors in case selection and observation; no standardised recording system; largely qualitative, prone to subjectivity; generalisation from few cases is difficult; sampling is not possible; information is incomparable since each informant gives her own opinion; researcher bias may distort quality; time-consuming and costly; not effective in complex large societies.

Genealogical Method

Developed by W.H.R. Rivers during the Torres Straits expedition of 1898-99, the genealogical method became a standard procedure in social anthropological ethnographic research. Its primary aim is the analysis of social organisation interpersonal relations and living arrangements between members of a society through extensive interviewing to record descent, succession, and inheritance. It is especially valuable for studying kinship and social structure by charting pedigrees and mapping residence details, and for tracing migration patterns and early migrants.

Challenges: some cultures have name taboos, especially for the dead and certain relatives, which may require collecting genealogical information from persons who do not themselves appear in it. Practices of adoption and name exchange, and either the scarcity or proliferation of names, add further complexity.

Genealogy record keeping in India: Charans (Bards) traditionally maintained written genealogy records for various castes. Key repositories exist at Haridwar, Kurukshetra, Trimbakeshwar, Chintpurni, and Varanasi. The Hindi term for genealogist is panda. Brahmin Pandits or "pandas" maintain records called Vahis (Bahis), passed down through generations, classified by district and village of origin. Records at some sites trace family history for more than twenty prior generations, stretching across many centuries. The Genealogical Society of Utah has documented Hindu family records dating to 1194 maintained by pandas.

Life History

Life histories focus on situating an individual's life within its social and cultural milieu, examining sharp turning points and choices made in specific circumstances to reveal what these choices disclose about broader beliefs and attitudes. Unlike biographies (systematic accounts of a whole or substantial part of a life), life histories aspire to triangulation of meaning, context, and evidence drawing on biographical accounts, diaries, letters, photographs, and folklore as source material.

Advantages: systematically explores the experience of social change; captures individual perspectives otherwise missed by quantitative methods; enables "thick description" of context; records effects of age and specific historical periods. Criteria: the subject must be viewed as a member of a cultural group, not in isolation; behaviour must be seen as socially relevant and as arising in response to definite social stimulations; the family must be viewed as transmitting culture; the continuous character of experience from adulthood should be stressed; and life history material must be organised and conceptualised.

Oral History

Oral history is the recording, preservation, and interpretation of historical information based on personal experiences and opinions of the speaker. It includes eye-witness evidence of past events and may encompass folklore, myths, songs, and stories passed down through oral tradition. It is invaluable for preserving the knowledge and understanding of older people and for societies without written records.

Historical Method

The historical method studies phenomena in historical sequence, facilitating comparison across time. It examines the origin, development, and gradual evolution of institutions, societies, and cultures in the background of whole human history. Primary sources include folklore, monuments, inscriptions, autobiographies, coins, archival materials, travelogues, and museum specimens. Westermarck's History of Human Marriage is an exemplary application, tracing the gradual evolution of marriage as an institution through historical method.

Sampling Methods

Sampling is necessary when collecting information about the entire population is practically impossible. A statistical sample is a miniature cross-section of the entire population from which it is taken. Randomisation protects against selection bias and provides a basis for applying statistical distribution theory.

  • Simple random sampling:: Each person or item has an equal chance of being chosen. The most basic form.
  • Stratified random sampling:: The population is divided into distinct strata, and each stratum is sampled separately. Increases precision and allows smaller overall sample sizes by guaranteeing inclusion of key groups. Example: sampling elderly, unemployed, and single-parent families separately in a study of poverty.
  • Cluster sampling:: Used when populations naturally congregate in clusters. A random sample of clusters is taken, then all or a sample of elements within each cluster are studied. Example: sampling organisations and studying the managers within them. Less precise than simple random sampling but more cost-effective when population is geographically dispersed.
  • Multi-stage sampling:: Sampling done in stages. Example: first-stage selection of corporations, second-stage selection of factories within corporations, third-stage selection of managers within factories. Common when populations are widely dispersed.
  • Area sampling:: Small geographical areas are designated as sampling units; households within those areas are surveyed. The size of the areas and the fraction surveyed depend on population distribution, map availability, and accuracy required.

Analysis, Interpretation, and Presentation of Data

Processing and Analysis

Steps in data processing: editing (examining raw data to detect and correct errors); coding (assigning numerals or symbols to answers); classification (arranging data into homogeneous groups for interpretation); tabulation (arranging data in tables conserves space, facilitates comparison, aids summation, and enables detection of errors).

Types of analysis: descriptive analysis (studying the distribution of one or more variables unidimensional, bivariate, or multivariate); correlation analysis (studying joint variation of two or more variables to determine the degree of correlation); inferential analysis (tests of significance for testing hypotheses to determine with what validity data indicate certain conclusions).

Interpretation

Interpretation is drawing inferences from collected facts after analytical or experimental study a search for broader meaning in research findings. Its two major aspects are: establishing continuity by linking results of the present study with those of related studies; and establishing explanatory concepts that guide future research. Interpretation helps the researcher understand the abstract principle beneath the findings, link up findings with other studies, make predictions about concrete events, stimulate further inquiry, and facilitate the transition from exploratory to experimental research.

Presentation and Reporting

Two types of research reports: technical reports (emphasise methods, assumptions, detailed findings with limitations and supporting data include summary of results, nature of study, methods, data, analysis, conclusions, bibliography, appendices, and index); popular reports (emphasise simplicity and attractiveness, use charts, diagrams, and clear writing, focus on practical aspects and policy implications).

Steps in writing a report: logical analysis of subject matter; preparation of final outline; preparation of rough draft; rewriting and polishing; preparation of final bibliography; writing the final draft.

Shift from Classical to Contemporary Interpretation and Presentation

Classical anthropological writings (late 19th-early 20th century) focused on cultural evolution and the search for universal laws. Tylor and Morgan framed data interpretation around identifying stages of cultural evolution and tracing progress from "primitive" to "civilised" forms. Presentation was heavily ethnographic, emphasising the exotic "otherness" of non-Western societies within a Eurocentric framework.

With the influence of Boas and cultural relativism in the early to mid-20th century, the focus shifted to understanding unique cultural systems and historical trajectories. Malinowski and Mead emphasised participant observation and rich contextual portrayal. Interpretation focused on cultural meanings, social practices, and lived experiences. Data was presented as comprehensive ethnographic monographs holistic accounts through ethnographic narrative.

In recent decades, postmodern and poststructuralist perspectives have challenged objective knowledge and the anthropologist's sole interpretive authority. Contemporary texts are more reflexive, acknowledging the researcher's positionality and incorporating multiple voices from within the community. Theoretical frameworks feminist anthropology, postcolonial theory, intersectionality highlight power dynamics and social inequalities. Data presentation has become interdisciplinary and multimedia, incorporating photographs, audio recordings, videos, and digital media. Ethical considerations informed consent, confidentiality, accurate and respectful representation receive explicit attention. Critical reflexivity and transparency in research processes are emphasised throughout.

Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) and Participatory Learning and Action (PLA)

PRA and PLA are participatory research methodologies developed to address power imbalances in conventional research by involving communities as active participants in the research process rather than as passive subjects.

PRA emerged in the 1980s as a critique of extractive research that took data from communities without returning benefits. It uses tools like social maps, seasonal calendars, wealth ranking, Venn diagrams, timelines, and transect walks all generated and interpreted by community members. The researcher acts as a facilitator, not a data extractor. PLA extended PRA's participatory ethos beyond appraisal to ongoing action: communities identify their own problems, analyse causes, plan interventions, implement them, and evaluate outcomes in a cyclical process. Both are widely used in development anthropology, health programmes, natural resource management, and community-based planning.

Phenomenology as a Research Method

Phenomenology is a philosophical tradition, originating with Husserl and developed by Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty, that has been adopted as a research approach in anthropology. It focuses on the lived experience of individuals understanding how people experience and give meaning to phenomena in their world from the first-person perspective. In anthropological fieldwork, a phenomenological approach requires the researcher to "bracket" (temporarily set aside) her own assumptions and cultural frameworks and attempt to understand the world as it is experienced by the people being studied. It privileges embodied experience how the body perceives, moves through, and makes sense of the world over abstract cognitive categories. Phenomenological anthropology has been influential in the anthropology of illness, sensory anthropology, and the study of religious experience.
