Framework: Periodisation of Indian Prehistory

The evolution of Indian culture and civilisation can be traced through a continuous archaeological sequence spanning from the Lower Palaeolithic (approximately 2 million years before present) to the emergence of literate, urban civilisations in the 3rd millennium BCE and beyond. The geological terms Palaeozoic, Mesozoic, and so on inspired archaeologists to coin parallel terms Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic to divide prehistoric time. The discipline of archaeology is indispensable for this reconstruction: without it, physical anthropologists could not have determined the place of Homo sapiens in nature, and cultural anthropologists could not have traced the emergence and development of customs and social behaviour from the prehistoric level.

Six major chronological stages organise the evidence: Lower, Middle, and Upper Palaeolithic; Mesolithic; Neolithic/Chalcolithic; and the emergence of urban civilisation (Bronze Age) followed by the Iron Age.

Palaeolithic India

Palaeolithic ("Old Stone Age") cultures are defined by the use of unpolished, chipped stone tools. In tropical India, humans were essentially parasites on nature during this period the major food sources were wild plant foods (roots and tubers, fruits, seeds, berries, gums, leafy greens) supplemented by hunting of large game and scavenging.

Lower Palaeolithic

The Lower Palaeolithic is characterised by the Acheulian tradition bifacially worked handaxes and cleavers of the same type found across Africa and Europe. In India, the Acheulian is found widely in the Deccan plateau, the Narmada valley, and peninsular regions. Key sites include Attirampakkam (Tamil Nadu), where handaxes dating to over 1.5 million years ago have been recovered, making it one of the earliest Palaeolithic sites outside Africa. The Soanian tradition of the Siwalik foothills of north-west India is characterised by chopping tools rather than handaxes.

Middle Palaeolithic

The Middle Palaeolithic (approximately 300,000-40,000 BP) is associated with Levallois and prepared-core flaking techniques and a shift to smaller, more refined flake tools. Evidence from Indian Middle Palaeolithic sites shows that sun-dried bread of wild grass seeds was already being prepared and consumed. Chemical analysis of starch grains on stone tools confirms this.

Upper Palaeolithic

The Upper Palaeolithic in India (approximately 40,000-10,000 BP) is associated with blade-based industries and the earliest systematic rock art. Bhimbetka rock shelters in Madhya Pradesh contain paintings that appear to date from the Mesolithic through the historical period, with the earliest engravings and cupule-bearing rocks at Daraki-Chattan (MP) dated to between 300,000 and 70,000 BC.

Prehistoric Art

Cupules

Cupules are cup-shaped impressions hammered into rock surfaces, typically 1.5 to 10 cm in diameter and 10-12 mm deep. Robert G. Bednarik attributes the earliest cupule-making to Homo erectus. The oldest cupule-bearing rock is at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania (approximately 1.7 million BCE). In India, cupules are found at Bhimbetka and at Daraki-Chattan (MP), discovered by Ramesh Kumar Pancholi in 1993. Many scholars associate them with fertility rites, but no conclusive cultural explanation exists.

Petroglyphs and Geoglyphs

Petroglyphs are engravings and carvings on rock surfaces. The Konkan Petroglyphs of Maharashtra and Goa (UNESCO Tentative List) comprise over 600 figures in clusters along 900 km of coast, dating to approximately 30,000 years ago. The level of artistic skill in rock etching and scooping is a significant marker of the intellectual endowment of the cultural group. Ladakh petroglyphs are among other notable examples.

Rock Paintings

The first discovery of rock paintings anywhere in the world was made in India in 1867-68 by Archibold Carlleyle at Sohagighat in the Kaimur hills (modern Mirzapur). India has over 5,000 rock art sites. The world's oldest known figurative cave painting (51,200 years old, discovered in 2024) is at Leang Karampuang cave, Sulawesi, Indonesia predating Indian sites but establishing the global antiquity of the tradition.

Bhimbetka (MP): UNESCO World Heritage Site

Located 45 km south of Bhopal in the Raisen district, Bhimbetka comprises over 800 rock shelters in five clusters on the southern edge of the Vindhyan hills, with around 600 containing prehistoric paintings the largest concentration at one site in the world. Discovered in 1957-58 by V.S. Wakankar. Paintings date from the Mesolithic Period through the early historical period. Cultural traditions of 21 adjacent villages bear strong resemblance to those represented in the paintings.

Chronological analysis identifies four developmental stages:

  • Stage 1: Hunters and gatherers in symbols and petroglyphs Palaeolithic to Mesolithic antiquity.
  • Stage 2: Hunters and gatherers in hunting and dancing scenes plus geometric designs Mesolithic.
  • Stage 3: Settled agriculturists and animal keepers using pottery Neolithic/Chalcolithic.
  • Stage 4: Early historic period horses and horse-riders, armed warriors, dance styles, religious symbols.

Subject matter: according to Yasodhra Mathpal and Somnath Chakraverty, approximately 6,214 rock art motifs at Bhimbetka are dominated by zoomorphs (29 animal species depicted, with deer most common) and anthropomorphs. Less common are daily life activities, geometric designs, and symbols. Wild animals depicted include deer, boar, bison, elephant, tiger, rhino, neelgai. Social scenes include hunting groups, family activities, group dancing, birth celebrations, child burial, and mourning. Religious scenes include masked hunters, sorcerers, composite animals, and abstract paintings at Jaora.

Stylistic features: paintings made with fingers, or brushes of feathers, wood stems, and porcupine needles. Animals are rendered naturalistically, humans are stylistic, abstract, or matchstick-like. Colour pigments: red (iron oxide/geru/haematite) and white (limestone) most common; green and yellow from chalcedony; black from charcoal, manganese or soot. Blue largely absent.

Interpretations of purpose: leisure time, visual recording of daily life, storytelling, decoration. But some paintings were clearly ritual made in uninhabited caves, at unreachable locations, with superimposition of up to 20 layers. Major theories include sympathetic magic (hunting rituals), shamanism, and fertility cult.

Mesolithic India (approximately 10,000-2,000 BP)

The Mesolithic is defined as the earliest Holocene culture occurring before agriculture was established. It has enormous culture-historical importance in Old World prehistory. The Pleistocene-Holocene transition (approximately 10,000 years ago) brought a fundamental geoclimatic change: temperatures rose 5-10°C, continental ice sheets melted, sea levels rose up to 120 m, and the climate became warmer, wetter, and more stable. Many Pleistocene megafauna (mammoths, giant deer) went extinct, and plant cover shifted from arctic tundra to temperate vegetation.

Toolkit: Microliths

The defining feature of the Mesolithic is the microlith tiny stone tools under 3 cm in length, too small for direct use, hafted in grooves on wooden or bone handles to create composite tools (bows and arrows, harpoons, knives). Made using the pressure flaking technique from quartz, chert, agate, and chalcedony. Geometric forms (lunates/crescents, triangles, trapezes, transverse arrowheads) and non-geometric forms coexist. Microliths served for harvesting plants, slicing, grating, processing fibres, drilling shells, and woodwork.

Characteristics of Mesolithic Culture

  • Hunting and gathering continued, but with specialisation toward smaller and medium-sized animals (deer, antelope, wild boar) and greater use of fish, birds, and plant resources (nuts, fruits, tubers, seeds, honey).
  • Incipient domestication of animals: sheep, goats, cattle, and dogs. Sites at Bagor (Rajasthan), Loteshwar and Ratanpura (north Gujarat), and Adamgarh (MP) have yielded bones of domesticated animals.
  • First signs of food storage (pits, hearths, post-holes).
  • Relatively more sedentary life: communities settled near rivers, lakes, uplands, and fertile plains. Circular or oval huts with post-holes at Bagor and Mahadaha (as early as 8000 BC).
  • Rock paintings continued from the Upper Palaeolithic but became more naturalistic and dynamic (Bhimbetka: scenes of daily life, hunting, and dance).
  • Burials with grave goods suggest belief in afterlife. Human skeletons at Bagor, Langhnaj, Sarai Nahar Rai. Very occasionally, double burials.

The earliest discovery of microliths was made by A.C.L. Carlyle in the Mirzapur region. Robert Bruce Foote, the "Father of Indian Prehistory," discovered microliths in Kurnool caves and several sites in South India and Gujarat. Today, Mesolithic sites are found almost all over India (except coastal Kerala, parts of Punjab-Haryana, and the Northeast), showing that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers had colonised the whole country. Nearly 60 radiocarbon and 8 TL dates from over 20 sites show that Mesolithic people lived between 10,000 and 2,000 BP.

Key Mesolithic Sites in India

Langhnaj (Gujarat)

Located on sand dunes near the Sabarmati River in Mehsana district, excavated by H.D. Sankalia and Irawati Karve in the 1940s. It was the first site in the arid zone to reveal a Mesolithic culture existing alongside urban Harappan settlements. Yielded microliths, querns, grinders, animal bones (including rhinoceros), and human skeletons with careful burial practices. Radiocarbon dates around 2000 BC prove that Mesolithic communities survived within 100-200 km of mature Harappan centres demonstrating coexistence of hunting-gathering groups with urban growth.

Bagor (Rajasthan)

On the left bank of the Kothari River, 25 km west of Bhilwara. Excavated by V.N. Misra (1973-77). The best-documented Mesolithic site in India; illustrates a gradual cultural transition from Mesolithic (5000-2800 BCE) through Neolithic, Chalcolithic, and Iron Age. Microlithic assemblage is among the richest in the world more than 40 types recognised, in chert and quartz. Animal bones show both wild (blackbuck, chinkara, chital, sambhar) and domesticated species (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig) from Phase I onward; approximately 80% of remains are domesticated. Burials evolved from extended (without grave goods) to flexed (with elaborate grave goods). Kenneth Kennedy identified both male and female skeletons; dental evidence shows early dietary change.

Bhimbetka (MP)

In its Mesolithic phase, Bhimbetka yielded stone tools, pottery, copper and iron implements, painted pottery, beads of stone/steatite/faience/terracotta, faunal remains, and human burials. Rock art documents art, technology, environment, subsistence, and ritual behaviour. Mesolithic phase reveals contact with Chalcolithic farmers through non-local material.

Ganga/Belan Valley Sites

Sarai Nahar Rai, Mahadaha, and Damdama in ox-bow lake settings; Chopani Mando in the Belan Valley provides one of the most complete unbroken cultural sequences from Early Mesolithic to Neolithic. Animal bones include cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, elephant, pig, tortoise some possibly domesticated. Early examples of structured burials; human skeletons generally in E-W oriented graves.

Adamgarh (MP)

Approximately 5,000 tools and 250 kg of waste flakes recovered; raw materials chert, chalcedony, jasper, and agate obtained locally from the Narmada valley.

Teri Sites (Tamil Nadu)

A group of 11 microlithic clusters on red fossilised sand dunes (teris) along the eastern coast, first discovered by Robert Bruce Foote in the late 19th century. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers exploited marine resources. Only quartz and chert microliths survived; all organic material decayed, making dating impossible.

West Asia and European Mesolithic (for comparison)

In West Asia (the Levant): Kebaran (23,000-13,000 BCE) → Natufian (13,000-9,500 BCE, semi-sedentary with wild cereal collection, named after Wadi Natuf, Israel). In Europe: Azilian, Tardenoisian, Maglemosian (forest/lake/swamp adaptation with canoes, harpoons), Kongemose, Ertebølle (pottery, settled fishing), Lepenski Vir (fish-based, sedentary villages), Swiderian.

Neolithic India (approximately 7000-1000 BCE, region-specific)

The Neolithic (New Stone Age) represents the final stage of the Stone Age, broadly from 10,000 to 3,000 BCE depending on the region. The term was first introduced by Sir John Lubbock in 1865. It is characterised by a profound shift from mobile hunting-gathering to settled farming communities the transition to food production. Recognition of Neolithic in India dates to 1852 when an axe was found in Mysore.

Characteristic Features

  • Domestication of plants and animals became central, leading to food surplus.
  • Tools became ground and polished. Common tools: polished stone axes/celts and adzes (forest clearance), chisels, hoes, sickles, grinding stones, querns (grain processing), arrowheads, mace heads. Technique involved four steps: flaking, pecking, grinding, and polishing.
  • Pottery: a vast range of forms including storage jars, bowls, cooking pots, and plates.
  • Sedentism: permanent villages with mud, stone, or wattle-and-daub houses; storage facilities for grains.
  • Population increase; division of labour; kinship-based social structures.
  • Evidence of rituals and burial practices with grave goods indicating social differentiation.
  • Figurines of mother goddesses (fertility cult) found worldwide: Catalhöyük (Turkey), Mehrgarh (India).
  • Environmental impact: agriculture led to deforestation, soil modification, and domesticated landscapes.

Theories of the Origin of Food Production

  • Oasis Theory (V. Gordon Childe):: Post-Ice Age desiccation forced humans, animals, and plants to cluster around oases in the Near East, leading to domestication through close proximity. Limitation: post-Ice Age climate was actually improving in the Fertile Crescent.
  • Hilly Flanks/Nuclear Zone Theory (Robert Braidwood):: Domestication occurred in the "Hilly Flanks/Nuclear Zones" of the Fertile Crescent (Zagros Mountains), where wild ancestors of wheat, barley, sheep, and goats lived domestication was the natural outcome of human experimentation. Limitation: fails to explain the ultimate trigger.
  • Population Pressure/Edge Zone Theory (Lewis Binford):: Improved climates caused population growth in optimal zones, forcing groups into marginal areas where they were compelled to intensify food production. Limitation: assumes pressure preceded domestication, but some early sites show abundance.
  • Broad Spectrum Revolution (Kent Flannery):: In the late Pleistocene, humans began exploiting a much wider range of resources a pre-adaptation to agriculture that led to genetic changes in plants and deeper investment in sedentary life. Limitation: too deterministic.
  • Coevolutionary Theory (David Rindos):: Domestication was an unconscious process of mutualism human activities (discarding seeds, weeding) unintentionally selected for desirable traits in plants. Limitation: downplays human intentionality.
  • Feasting/Competitive Display Model (Brian Hayden):: Ambitious individuals drove domestication to produce surplus for feasts to gain social power. Limitation: needs social complexity to precede domestication.
  • Symbolic Revolution Theory (Jacques Cauvin):: A change in human psychology and symbolism (worship of wild bulls and mother goddesses) preceded domestication, creating a worldview where humans saw themselves in control of nature. Limitation: highly abstract and difficult to test.

Today, most archaeologists see food production as multicausal, protracted, and region-specific. Agriculture arose independently in at least 10-12 regions worldwide: Fertile Crescent (8 founder crops: einkorn wheat, emmer wheat, barley, lentil, pea, chickpea, bitter vetch, flax); China (millet Yellow River; rice Yangtze); South and Southeast Asia (rice, millets, pulses, cotton, sesame, banana, sugarcane); Africa (sorghum, pearl millet); Americas (maize, potato, quinoa).

V. Gordon Childe coined the term "Neolithic Revolution" in the 1920s-30s comparing it to the Industrial Revolution in significance. He saw it as an economic transformation: "Stockbreeding and the cultivation of plants were revolutionary steps in man's emancipation from dependence on the external environment." However, contemporary archaeology emphasises that sedentism predated domestication in the Levant (Natufian Culture), pottery predated agriculture in East Asia, and animal domestication did not always coincide with plant domestication. It is more accurate to speak of Neolithic transitions rather than a singular revolution.

Regional Zonation of Indian Neolithic

V.D. Krishnaswami (1959) divided Indian Neolithic into four zones: Northern (Kashmir pit dwellings, pointed butt-celts); Eastern (shouldered celts, Bihar/Orissa/West Bengal/Assam); Central and Western (microliths and pot sherds, Malwa/northern Maharashtra); Southern (broad butt-end celts Brahmagiri, Sangankallu, Piklihal). H.D. Sankalia (1962) noted that most Indian sites show a combination of Neolithic and Chalcolithic traits (Neo-Chalcolithic).

Northwest India: Mehrgarh

Mehrgarh, near the Bolan Pass in Baluchistan, was discovered in 1977 by a French archaeological team led by Jarrige. It covers more than 200 hectares one of the largest Neolithic settlements between the Indus and the Mediterranean. Seven cultural layers were found, starting with an aceramic Neolithic phase. Its later periods were contemporary to the urban phases of the Indus Valley Civilisation.

Importance:

  • Provides the earliest clear evidence of farming and pastoralism in the Indian subcontinent (approximately 7000 BCE) local domestication of barley, wheat (cotton seeds also found), and subsequently sheep, goat, and cattle (by 6000 BC).
  • Evidence of mud-brick compartmentalised storage structures indicates communal organisation.
  • Increasing craft specialisation in final stages: long-distance trade networks bringing ivory, shell, lapis lazuli, and carnelian.
  • Provides the earliest evidence of the agricultural tradition that formed the village base of the urban Indus Civilisation several millennia later.

Kashmir Valley Neolithic

Occupied from 3000 BCE; radiocarbon dates place the Neolithic at 2500-1500 BC. Over 40 sites discovered. The Kashmir Neolithic appears to be a migration from outside local sheep, goat, and subsequently cattle were domesticated but crop seeds were brought from elsewhere. Key diagnostic features: aceramic stage and pit dwellings.

Burzahom (first explored by the Yale Cambridge Expedition in 1936, continued by ASI in the 1960s-70s): Underground dwelling pits with hearths and inner storage pits (suitable for the cold climate), later abandoned for overground huts. Crops: wheat, barley, mansur, pea, clove. Developed bone tool industry diagnostic of Burzahom Neolithic. Huge skeletal remains including domesticated dog one of the earliest domesticated dog burials in South Asia. A large rectangular superstructure with 42 post-holes, possibly a community assembly hall. Rock art etching showing hunting scene with a dog. Connects West Asia, Central Asia, and South Asia.

Gufkral: Older than Burzahom. Aceramic Neolithic at the base, followed by ceramic Neolithic.

Northeast India

Neolithic implements have been found across the Northeast since Lubbock (1867) from upper Assam. Key sites: Daojali Hading (stratified Neolithic site, North Cachar Hills, Assam) with ground stone tools and cord-impressed handmade pottery; Garo Hills (Meghalaya) are particularly rich. Sankalia inferred dates of 5000-1000 BC. Parallels with Yangshao and Langshanoid cultures of China and the Hoabinhian of Thailand suggest Eastern migration routes.

Vindhya-Ganga Valley

The Belan Valley provides one of the most complete and unbroken cultural sequences from Early Mesolithic to Neolithic: Chopani Mando (proto-Neolithic), Mahagara (early Neolithic 20 thatched huts excavated; evidence of rice cultivation from 7th-5th millennium BCE, among the earliest dates for rice in the world), Koldihwa, Sohagura. Domestication of animals may have been initiated here. Migration of these farmers subsequently established agriculture in the Middle Ganga Plain (Chirand, Sonepur in Bihar; Pandu Rajar Dhibi in Bengal).

Deccan/South India: Neolithic

Over 100 sites in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. Probably village farming began here around 3000-2500 BC, contemporary with the Early Indus phase. Main subsistence: animal husbandry dominant (80-85% bones of humpless cattle and buffalo); agriculture secondary (ragi and hulgi millets). Technology: polished stone tools of dolerite and trap, along with bone tools and microliths. Pottery: crude, dull grey, hand-made, often painted with geometric designs in ochre or dark brown.

Neolithic Ash Mound Sites are a distinctive feature of the Andhra-Karnataka region large deposits of burnt cattle dung found at Utnur, Piklihal, Palavoy, Sanganakallu/Kupgal, Kodekal, Budihal, Hulikallu. At Utnur, hoof impressions in ash and remains of fenced wooden stockades prove controlled cattle penning. At Budihal, hoof impressions appear beneath cow dung layers alongside a butchering floor. The ash mounds span the entire Neolithic chronology of the southern Deccan and their periodic burning episodes suggest symbolic or ritual significance resembling present-day practices in parts of south India.

The Harappan Civilisation (approximately 3000-1500 BCE)

Discovery and Nomenclature

The ruins of the Harappan Civilisation were discovered in 1924, when Sir John Marshall (DG ASI) announced to the world in The Illustrated London News what had been excavated by Dayaram Sahni at Harappa (on the Ravi, Montgomery district, Punjab, Pakistan, 1921) and R.D. Banerjee at Mohenjodaro (on the Indus, Larkana district, Sindh, Pakistan, 1922). Marshall initially called it the "Indus Valley Civilisation."

However, since the 1950s, more sites have been found on the Ghaggar-Hakra river system (the ancient Saraswati) than on the Indus proper including major cities like Rakhigarhi and Ganweriwala. Over 1,022 sites are now known, spread over approximately 1.3 million square km of India and Pakistan. Following standard archaeological convention of naming after the first type-site, scholars now prefer "Harappan Civilisation."

Phases

  • Early Harappan (3500-2600 BCE): Formative signs of urban beginnings; regional diversity; local trade.
  • Mature Harappan (2600-1900 BCE): Peak urbanisation sustained for 500-600 years; remarkable cultural uniformity over vast area; extensive inter-regional and inter-civilisational trade.
  • Late Harappan (1900-1700 BCE): Phase of relatively rapid de-urbanisation within 200-300 years.

Important Features

  • Riverine civilisation: sites along perennial rivers and their tributaries; flood irrigation; agriculture of wheat, rice, barley, cotton, dates, mustard, sesame, chickpea but no maize.
  • Bronze Age: knew gold, silver, copper, but not iron.
  • Largest ancient civilisation (area-wise) compared to contemporary Bronze Age civilisations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China.
  • First urban civilisation of India: extensive town planning grid-pattern streets, fortified citadels, standardised bricks (ratio 1:2:4, English bond), drainage system, water management; absence of monumental palaces.
  • Proto-historic phase: literacy evident from public use of script on seals, pots, and signboards, but the script remains undeciphered.
  • Trade and commerce: highly standardised craft; standardised weights and measures (system 1:2:8:16:32:64 in smaller weights); extensive networks within the subcontinent and with Mesopotamia, Oman, Bahrain (Dilmun), and Iran; no coins found.
  • Relatively egalitarian society with less interest in ostentatious expenditure or warfare.

Urban Architecture

Cities of 150-250 hectares dominated by walls and impressive gateways probably for access control and flood protection rather than defence. Planned division: upper town (citadel, on a raised platform, housing important buildings of the elite class) and lower town (unfortified, mixed residential and commercial; polluting industries, brick-kilns, cemeteries placed outside). Network of roads intersecting at right angles in a grid pattern along E-W and N-S directions; corners of roads rounded. Shared community spaces: assembly halls, stadiums, markets, police checkposts, and street lighting.

Sanitation the most remarkable feature: the world's first planned urban sanitation system. Multi-layered drainage: service drains from houses → gradient/slope → manholes → covered burnt-brick drains → sump or cesspit → main drain. At Dholavira, separate drains for wastewater and rainwater. System of disposal for household garbage; public dustbins on side streets. Mohenjodaro was probably the cleanest city in the ancient world.

Domestic architecture: no ornamentation; stark utilitarianism. Houses varied greatly in size but were of similar design flat-roofed, with one or two storeys, no door or window opening on the main road (opening at rear or on sides), open inner courtyard, bathing areas in nearly all houses. Rich households had private wells; public wells were numerous. Private toilets with slope drainage.

The Indus Script

Approximately 3,000-4,000 inscriptions found; 90% from Harappa and Mohenjodaro alone. Mostly incised on seals; also on metals, bone, ivory, pottery, and stoneware. Around 400 unique signs (250 symbols plus variants) too many to be alphabetic, too few to be pictorial; appears to be logo-syllabic. Written in boustrophedon (alternating right-to-left and left-to-right). Statistical analysis reveals high structure certain signs consistently appear at the beginning, others at the end. Seals likely controlled trade, marked ownership, and authorised transactions. The script defies decipherment: no bilingual inscription, short texts (average 5 symbols; longest about 20), no clear diachronic evolution, unknown underlying language. Major hypotheses: Indo-European (S.R. Rao), Proto-Dravidian (Yuri Knorozov, Asko Parpola, Iravatham Mahadevan), and non-linguistic symbol system (Steve Farmer et al.).

Origin of the Harappan Civilisation

The Mesopotamian Diffusion hypothesis (Wheeler and other colonial scholars) that the Indus civilisation resulted from influence from Mesopotamia or Iran is completely rejected. Material similarities are superficial; fundamental differences exist in script, bricks, seals, city planning, and architecture. The Rakhigarhi DNA study (2019) found no evidence of mass migration from west or Central Asia into India during or before the Harappan period. The Aryan Origin hypothesis (Nationalist historians equating Harappans with Vedic Aryans) is similarly disproved: Aryans were pastoralists; horse centrality, spoked wheel (ratha), and cow worship all prominent in the Vedas are absent at Harappan sites; the Rakhigarhi DNA study did not find the R1a1 genetic marker of steppe pastoral origin.

The accepted view is indigenous, gradual evolution: small animal-herding and subsistence-agriculture communities (Nal, Zhob, Quli, Mundigak in Baluchistan) → Mehrgarh and larger Neolithic villages → site numbers increasing dramatically after 4000 BCE → migration into the Indus valley due to environmental pressure → gradual development of Early Harappan urban features → Mature Harappan cultural uniformity.

Economic Life

Intensive agriculture: wheat, barley, lentils, mustard, sesame, chickpea; multiple cropping seasons; ploughing (ploughmarks at Kalibangan; terracotta plough toy at Banawali); flood irrigation dominant; irrigation canals at Shortughai (exceptional). Non-food crops: cotton. Late Harappan: jowar and bajra added. Animal husbandry, hunting, and fishing supplemented agriculture. Scientific examination of clay pots reveals turmeric, ginger, banana, and dairy products.

Craft specialisation: bead-making (Lothal, Chanhu-daro carnelian beads using hard cutting, rounding, polishing, and drilling); shell-working (Nageshwar, Balakot, Chanhu-daro); bronze work using lost-wax casting (Dancing Girl of Mohenjodaro; Bronze Bull of Kalibangan; Copper bird and dog of Lothal); lapidary work with lapis lazuli, agate, jasper, jade, carnelian, onyx; faience; ivory; textiles (cotton cloth Mesopotamian texts refer to it as Meluhhan cotton); seals of soft stone (steatite) or faience with intaglio carving; pottery (black-on-red, wheel-turned, highly glazed, with pipal leaf, fish scale, intersecting circles, and peacock motifs).

Standardisation: bricks in 1:2:4 ratio throughout the civilisation; weights in proportional systems (1:2:8:16:32:64 for smaller weights; 160:200:320:640 for larger).

Trade Economy

Raw material sourcing: gold from Kolar (South India) and Central Asia/Afghanistan; silver from Jowar Hills (Rajasthan) and Afghanistan/Iran; copper from Khetri mines (Rajasthan the Ganeshwar-Jodhpura culture) and Oman; tin from Ferghana (Central Asia); lapis lazuli from Badakhshan (via Shortughai); carnelian and teak from Gujarat; marine shells from coastal Gujarat and Makran coast.

Trade routes: overland through Bolan Pass, Khyber Pass, and Kashmir route; to Mesopotamia via Iran through Baluchistan and the Iranian plateau; to Central Asia via Shortughai (a full-fledged Harappan colony in northern Afghanistan established near lapis lazuli and tin sources); to Peninsular India from Gujarat. River transport on the Indus. Maritime routes along coastal Gujarat to the Persian Gulf, Oman, Bahrain (Dilmun), and Mesopotamia.

Coastal settlements and ports: Sutkagendor and Sutka Koh (Makran coast); Balakot and Allahdino (Sindh coast); Kuntasi, Dholavira, and Lothal (Gujarat). Lothal (on the Bhogwa river, discovered by S.R. Rao in 1954) has a dockyard of burnt bricks (217 m × 36 m) the oldest known man-made dockyard in India cleverly designed to maintain the right sea water level for boats; warehouses and storage in proximity; Mesopotamian seals found. S.R. Rao is known as the father of marine archaeology in India.

Trading partners: Mesopotamia (Ur, Susa, Nippur have Harappan artefacts; Mesopotamian texts mention Dilmun/Bahrain, Magan/Oman, and Meluhha/Harappan zone as trading partners; a Mesopotamian inscription references "Šu-ilišu, interpreter of the Meluhhan language"); Arabian Peninsula and Persian Gulf (Omani sites show Harappan pottery and weight stones; copper from Oman); Central Asia (Shortughai). Exports: ivory, cotton textiles, timber, jewellery, beads, shell bangles, exotic animals. Imports: copper, silver, bitumen. Trade balance favoured Harappans. Barter trade; no coins.

Political Structure

The exact nature of Harappan political authority remains elusive. The old hypothesis of a single centralised empire ruled by a king is rejected the region is too extensive for effective prehistoric centralised control. Some scholars deny even state-level organisation, citing the absence of identifiable temples, administrative buildings, government officials, palaces, and royal burials. However, some sociopolitical authority that enforced order and cultural uniformity certainly existed. Two main hypotheses: mercantile class rule (various groups with totemic symbols on seals); or theocracy (a small, exclusive, priestly class headed by a priest-king or council of high priests). Hereditary monarchy is improbable there is no evidence of royal tombs, and the civilisation was unusually peaceful with a surprising absence of warfare.

Religion

No temple has been excavated at any Harappan site. Key religious elements:

  • Fertility cult: many terracotta female figurines identified by Marshall as mother goddesses; linga and yoni representations (fertility cult); Pashupati Seal from Mohenjodaro a figure in yogic posture (moolabandhasana), surrounded by rhino, elephant, tiger, and buffalo, with two deer at the base, three faces, and a horned headdress, possibly a proto-Shiva.
  • Nature worship: animals venerated unicorn (1,159 depictions), hump-less bull (95), elephant (55), humped zebu bull (54), tiger (21). Snake cult object. Horse, camel, donkey, and cow conspicuously absent from seals. Tree worship (peepal); some seals show women dancing around a goddess emerging from a tree.
  • Mythology: swastika as auspicious symbol; amulets indicating belief in supernatural forces; horned deity.
  • Yoga: many terracotta figures in yogic postures; a skeleton in yogic posture at Balathal (Rajasthan).
  • Fire rituals: fire pits and altars at Kalibangan, Banawali, Lothal, Nageshwar (but not at Harappa or Mohenjodaro).
  • Burial practices: no uniformity. Harappa provides the largest corpus (cemeteries R37 and Cemetery H). Types: extended full-body burial, secondary burial with partial remains, symbolic burial (Kalibangan, Dholavira). Double burials at Lothal and Rakhigarhi. Grave goods typically 15-20 pottery vessels. Wooden coffin burials at Harappa and Sanauli.

Major Cities

Mohenjodaro (Larkana district, Sindh, Pakistan)

On the banks of the Indus. Great Bath (12 m × 7 m × 2.5 m): the engineering marvel of the Harappan world watertight walls and floor with two layers of close-fit baked brick set in gypsum mortar, with a 2.5 cm thick bitumen sealer between layers; important for engineering and ritual purposes. Massive State Granary (over 1,000 sq m). Priest-King figure (bearded man wearing robe with trefoiled embroidery). Dancing Girl (bronze). Mother goddess figurines. Pashupati Seal. "City of wells" possibly over 700 wells. Cotton cloth and spindle whorls indicating flourishing textile industry.

Harappa (Bank of the Ravi, Montgomery district, Punjab, Pakistan)

Gateway city on the edge of the Harappan region. Twelve granaries outside the citadel near the river. Male Dancer (grey stone). Various burial practices across Cemetery R37 (Mature phase) and Cemetery H (Late phase).

Dholavira (Kutch, Gujarat, on Khadir island)

Discovered by J.P. Joshi in 1967. Located in the arid Great Rann of Kutch a port city on a small island. Three areas: Citadel, Middle Town, Lower Town. Primary building material: stone (unlike brick-built Harappan cities). Open-air stadium. Sophisticated water harvesting and conservation system: tanks, reservoirs (at least six large reservoirs, one 9 times the size of an Olympic swimming pool), drains, and channels harvesting rainwater from two storm water drains. At Dholavira, separate drains for wastewater and stormwater. Signboard of ten large symbols. Two polished stone pillars. Funerary practices unique: no skeletal remains in graves; symbolic/representative burials with grave goods (pottery); seven semi-circular/hemispherical graves. UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Rakhigarhi (Hisar, Haryana)

Largest excavated site of the Harappan Civilisation. Discovered by Suraj Bhan. Early Harappan phase (5000-2600 BCE): pre-urban settlements with mud-brick architecture; agricultural base with wheat, barley, and domesticated cattle/sheep/goats; early craft specialisation (copper/bronze tools, terracotta bangles and beads). Mature phase: citadel mound with mud-brick fortification wall; lapidary workshop with approximately 3,000 unfinished beads; bone and ivory working; large podium, two sacrificial pit chambers, fire altars, granary, market complex. DNA study of skeletal remains: proves indigenous origin of the Harappan Civilisation; no evidence of mass migration from west or Central Asia; majority of the South Asian population appears to be descended from Harappans.

Other Important Sites

  • Chanhu-daro (Sindh): major industrial site for seal manufacturing; bead and bangle factories; lipstick found.
  • Kalibangan (Hanumangarh, Rajasthan, on dried Ghaggar): large number of black bangles; fire altars; ploughed field (only site with ploughmarks showing criss-cross pattern indicating double cropping); gold objects; continuous occupation since pre-Harappan era.
  • Lothal (Gujarat, on Bhogwa river): dockyard; bead factory; Mesopotamian seals; double burials; antimony rod; game pieces (chess?); copper bird and dog.
  • Banawali (Haryana): oval-shaped settlement; only city with radial streets (instead of perpendicular); lacks systematic drainage; terracotta plough toy; terracotta toy wheels (spoked and solid).
  • Surkotada (Gujarat): horse teeth (unsubstantiated); twin fortification.
  • Bhirrana (Fatehabad, Haryana): among the oldest known Harappan sites in India; radiocarbon dated to 6th millennium BCE (8000 years before present); Dancing Girl graffiti on potsherd.
  • Daimabad (Maharashtra): bronze treasure.
  • Ropar (Punjab, India, on Sutlej): first Harappan site excavated after Indian independence; dog buried with human in oval burial.
  • Kunal (Hisar, Haryana): provides evidence of the transitional phase from Early to Mature Harappan.
  • Shortughai (northern Afghanistan): Harappan colony established near lapis lazuli and tin sources; irrigation canals found.

Decline of the Harappan Civilisation

The Aryan Invasion Theory (Wheeler, 1940s) is completely rejected: no evidence of large-scale military assault at any Harappan site; the so-called massacre skeletons at Mohenjodaro do not belong to the same period (George Dales); a sterile layer exists between Mature Harappan and Cemetery H levels; sites show gradual decline and abandonment, not abrupt destruction.

Other proposed factors include: decline in lapis lazuli trade with Mesopotamia (Shereen Ratnagar unconvincing as a sole cause); diseases and epidemics (leprosy appeared during the urban phase; tuberculosis in Late Harappan burials); flood theory (several silt layers at Mohenjodaro R.L. Raikes and G.F. Dales attributed to tectonic movements, but floods did not affect the entire civilisation); tectonic movements (earthquake → river capture → drying of Ghaggar-Hakra by 2000 BCE → depopulation of sites along its banks M.R. Mughal's study); coastal uplift disrupting maritime trade.

The most widely accepted explanation today is regional climate change prolonged drought reduced agricultural surplus, disrupted ecological balance, and caused famine. Harappans may have over-exploited their environment through over-cultivation, over-grazing, and excessive deforestation, decreasing soil fertility and increasing salinity. The result was gradual de-urbanisation: towns degraded and decayed; urban features disappeared; people migrated east and south; increasing ruralisation occurred. Scholars call the late phase a "post-urban phase" because Harappan traditions persisted even as the urban form dissolved.

Chalcolithic Cultures of India (approximately 2800-700 BCE)

Chalcolithic communities used both stone tools and copper tools. They were agro-pastoral communities never reaching the urbanisation level of the Harappans. These cultures emerged before the Harappan Age, coexisted with it, and continued after its decline. Idealised as a transitional period between Neolithic and Bronze Age.

Gandhara Grave Culture (Swat and Dir Valleys)

Covers the ancient Gandhara region (Timargarha, Balambat, Ghaligai Caves). RC dates 2500-1800 BCE. Graves with rectangular two-storied cavities separated by stone slabs; multiple burial styles (flexed, cremation with urn burials, fractional burials). "Funerary face urns" of terracotta. Copper-bronze objects (ornaments and weapons). Pottery affinities with Central Asia; lapis lazuli indicates contact with Badakhshan. Dwelling pits similar to Neolithic Kashmir. Connects the Indus Valley Civilisation to later urban societies. Key scholar: Ahmad Hasan Dani.

Cemetery H Culture (Punjab)

Post-urban phase in western Punjab pottery discovered in Cemetery H at Harappa (excavator: M.S. Vats). Two burial strata: earliest extended inhumations; later deposition of bones in urns. Grave goods: pottery and animal sacrifice. The earlier theory that Cemetery H people were invading Indo-Aryans is rejected by Kenoyer (1991): the culture reflects a change in settlement focus, not cultural discontinuity. ASI cranial analysis shows four types across two strata including Alpine (brachycephalic) and Mediterranean forms.

Ochre Coloured Pottery (OCP) Culture

Named after a redware ceramic with red slip and painted decoration; 2nd millennium BC, primarily in the Ganga-Yamuna Doab. Two sub-groups: NE Rajasthan (Ganeshwar-Jodhpura/Jodhpura-Siswal, 2800-2000 BCE) notable for over 1,000 copper objects including arrowheads, spearheads, and fishhooks; believed to have supplied copper to Harappan Kalibangan; excavated by R.C. Agrawal. Western UP (from 2000 BC): term "OCP culture" coined by B.B. Lal after excavating Hastinapur in 1951-52; sites including Lal Qila, Atranjikhera, Saipai; wattle-and-daub houses with rice husks in mud plaster; early rice and barley agriculture; succeeded by BRW and PGW. OCP is succeeded by the Black and Red Ware (BRW) and Painted Grey Ware (PGW) cultures.

Copper Hoard Culture

Thousands of copper hoards found in northern India without associated cultural items. First major discovery at Gungeria (MP) 400+ objects, over 350 kg. Dated approximately 2000-1500 BCE. Objects include swords with antennae hilts, harpoons, anthropomorphs, various axes, and ornaments made of pure copper by both beating and casting. Distribution from UP to Rajasthan, Bengal, and stray finds in the Deccan and Kerala. The OCP-Copper Hoard relationship remains one of the knottiest problems of Indian archaeology.

Sinauli (UP)

Belongs to OCP culture; dated 2000-1800 BCE. Major excavation (2018) led by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Manjul (ADG ASI). Findings: clear evidence of permanent settlement; three wooden chariots sheathed in copper (the first of their kind in the Indian subcontinent); 116 human burials in four-legged wooden coffins ornamented with copper and steatite; copper antenna swords indicating a highly martial culture; women's graves containing weapons (suggesting equal social status); anthropomorphic copper masks, horned crowns, and peepal leaf motifs reflecting a sophisticated symbolic-religious system.

Ahar/Banas Culture (SE Rajasthan, 2600-1500 BCE)

60+ sites; closest to Harappans geographically and chronologically. Most extensively excavated: Ahar, Gilund, and Balathal. This region was a source of copper supply to the Harappans active copper smelting, possibly a mining colony. Balathal: fortified enclosure, stone and mud-brick houses (suggesting possible internecine conflicts).

Kayatha Culture (MP, 2500-2000 BCE)

40+ settlements in Malwa, mostly on tributaries of the Chambal. Mixed economy: farming, stock raising, hunting, fishing; domesticated cattle and sheep/goat. Interestingly, horse remains found in Chalcolithic level at Kayatha. Small huts with wattle-and-daub walls and thatched roofs. Culture arose suddenly (no antecedents) and ended suddenly (possibly by earthquake).

Malwa Culture (MP, 1900-1400 BCE)

Most predominant Chalcolithic culture of central India; widely distributed across Malwa. Key sites: Navdatoli, Nagda, Eran. Subsistence base: wheat, barley, jawar, rice, legumes, oilseeds, fruits; cattle, sheep, goat, pig. Malwa ceramics more richly decorated than Harappan. Rich stone blade industry with copper objects. Terracotta female figurines (mother goddess), bull figurines, male figures in painted form. Specific fire altar structure. Malwa culture spread into north Maharashtra by 1700 BCE; both Malwa and Ahar declined around 1400 BCE (Dhavalikar: climatic deterioration).

Jorwe Culture (Maharashtra, 1600-700 BCE)

The most important Chalcolithic culture of Maharashtra, extending almost throughout the state except Konkan and Vidarbha. Named after the type-site Jorwe (Ahmadnagar); maximum cultural indicators from Inamgaon (Ghod river, Bhima valley); other sites include Prakash (Tapi valley) and Daimabad (Pravara-Godavari valley). Over 200 sites documented; only a few subjected to large-scale excavation. Features: dry-farming with stock raising and hunting-fishing; crop rotation practised; millets dominant in later stages. Cotton found. Granaries suggest surplus production. Evidence of irrigation (embankment and canals at Inamgaon). Dhavalikar identified a hereditary chiefdom society from grave construction quality, public structures (fortifications, ramparts, moats), and social hierarchy at Inamgaon. Religion: terracotta mother goddess; fire altars widespread; a jar from Daimabad shows a deity surrounded by animals similar to the Pashupati Seal. Burial: adults in extended posture in pits dug into house floors; children in urn burials within residential areas. Daimabad Bronze Treasure. Jorwe is the longest-lasting of the Deccan Chalcolithic cultures.

Settlements of Chalcolithic Communities

Non-urban in nature settled villages lacking surplus production, extensive trade, crafts, fortified towns, writing, and elaborate drainage systems. Some sites (Balathal, Nagda) show mud ramparts. Houses generally of wattle-and-daub with post-holes and compact mud floors; rarely mud bricks or fired bricks. Social differentiation visible in house size and location; distinct settlement hierarchy emerging; concept of private property evidenced at Inamgaon (western houses smaller without enclosure walls; eastern houses larger with enclosure walls). Almost all houses had animal enclosures.

Iron Age India

In the second millennium BCE, iron came into use in India the final technological and cultural stage in the Stone-Bronze-Iron Age sequence. With large-scale iron production came more permanent settlement patterns; iron weapons also put arms in the hands of the masses and set off large-scale movements of peoples.

Antiquity of Iron in India

The mono-centric theory (iron diffused into India from West Asia or from the Hittites) is rejected by D.K. Chakrabarti's analysis no such diffusion evidence exists. Multiple independent centres of iron metallurgy are now identified in the subcontinent. Key early evidence:

  • Mayiladumparai (Krishnagiri district, NW Tamil Nadu): approximately 2200 BCE possibly the oldest Iron Age site in India.
  • Sivagalai (Thamirabarani basin, Thoothukudi district): 1155 BCE earliest recorded evidence of iron technology globally.
  • Adichanallur (Thamirabarani basin): 1000 BCE many iron objects; gold objects; DNA analysis shows only 8% local Dravidians, the rest a mix of world populations.
  • Dadupur (near Lucknow): approximately 1700 BCE (corroded iron arrowhead).
  • Malhar (UP): approximately 1800 BCE.
  • Ahar (Rajasthan): iron artifacts from the middle Chalcolithic phase (2500-2000 BCE) onwards.

At least six early iron-using centres are identified: Baluchistan/northwest; Indo-Gangetic divide/upper Ganga valley; Rajasthan; eastern India; Malwa/central India; Vidarbha/Deccan; South India.

Painted Grey Ware (PGW) Culture North Indian Early Iron Phase (1000-600 BCE)

PGW: made of very fine clay, painted in black before firing, grey colour from firing in reducing conditions (absence of oxygen) at approximately 600°C. Geometric designs including lines, criss-crosses, circles, dots, sigma, semi-circles, swastika. First identified at Ahichchhatra (1940s); full significance understood after excavations at Hastinapur (1954-55) by B.B. Lal. Over 100 sites in the Indo-Gangetic divide and upper Ganga valley. Key Mahabharata sites excavated with PGW: Hastinapur, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Tilpat, Baghpat, Mathura, Bairat.

Economy: agriculture dominant (rice at Hastinapur, barley at Noh); animal husbandry (cattle, buffalo, sheep, pig, horse bones recovered from Hastinapur), fishing. Iron use limited mainly weapons (lances, spearheads, blades, daggers, arrowheads); some agricultural implements at Jakhera (sickle, hoe, ploughshare); copper continues. No coins. Some semi-precious stone beads suggesting trans-regional trade.

Society: houses of mud, mud-brick, and wattle-and-daub; some proto-urban elements at Jakhera. Religion: fireplaces at Atranjikhera with charred rice and bones (possible sacrifice); terracotta discs with incised designs; terracotta figurines.

Archaeology-Literature Correlation: B.B. Lal correlates Later Vedic literature with the iron-using PGW culture. The geographical area and timespan of PGW sites corresponds to the Kuru-Panchala kingdom the first large state after the decline of the Indus Valley Civilisation. Later Vedic texts suggest rural society with iron, rice/wheat/barley cultivation, glass, writing, dice all confirmable from archaeological finds.

Northern Black Polished Ware (NBPW) Culture North Indian Late Iron Phase (700/600-200/100 BCE)

First reported at Sarnath (1904) and then Bhita near Prayagraj. A fine ware sometimes as thin as 1.5 mm well-fired, wheel-made, deluxe pottery with a distinct metallic sound and characteristic glossy lustre (from alignment of mica platelets in the slip). Fired in closed pits in controlled atmosphere. Available in silver, golden, orange, chocolate, and pink, with black dominant. This was a great technological innovation in earthenware manufacturing.

Distribution: over 1,500 sites from Taxila and Charsada in the northwest to Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh; Prabhas Patan (Gujarat) to Tamluk (Bengal). Key sites: Ropar, Hastinapur, Atranjikhera, Kaushambi, Shravasti, Vaishali, Patna, Sonpur.

The NBPW period is associated with the Second Urbanisation of the Ganga valley (approximately 6th century BCE): state formation; considerable population increase; ring-wells; brick drains; fortifications; soak-pits; punch-marked coins. D.D. Kosambi and R.S. Sharma attributed this urbanisation to iron tools clearing forests and permitting intensive farming with surplus generation. However, Chakrabarti, Niharranjan Ray, A. Ghosh, and Makhhan Lal challenge this monocausal explanation iron technology certainly sustained the second urbanisation but the urban process involved multiple factors including administrative mechanisms and social institutions.

Archaeology-Literature Correlation: Buddhist literature is the main textual source for this period, corresponding to the era of the 16 Mahajanapadas, Jainism, Buddhism, and the Magadha Empire.

South Indian Megalithic Tradition (approximately 1200 BCE-300 CE)

From the Neo-Chalcolithic phase, South India entered the Megalithic phase. Megaliths are large stones erected to mark burial sites largely collective burials. They are found across most of the subcontinent but concentrated in peninsular India. Total 1,500+ sites; approximately 100 excavated. Largely dated between 1000 BC and 100 CE based on radiocarbon dates and stratigraphic record.

Typology

  • Dolmen:: Four stone slabs arranged in a box-like structure, completely or partially above or below ground. Associated with post-cremation rites. Common in North Karnataka where building material is abundant. Hire Benekal (Karnataka, 800-200 BCE) one of South India's largest megalithic sites with over 400 dolmens; indicates transition from nomadic to settled life in the Deccan.
  • Umbrella Stone (Topi-Kal):: Four slabs joined and erected over a burial (often urn burial) with a large rounded stone placed over them to resemble an umbrella.
  • Rock-cut caves:: Caves dug in laterite-stone with stairs, doorways, chambers, and central roof openings for grave goods.
  • Pit burials:: Pit dug for funeral; peripheral stone blocks in circular form as marker.
  • Urn burials:: Burials kept in jars buried underground; not always associated with large stones.
  • Sarcophagi:: Boat-shaped terracotta coffins for post-cremation rites of children; stone sarcophagi in hilly areas.
  • Menhirs:: Upright stones, usually large boulders, aligned in parallel lines. Mudumal (Narayanpet district, Telangana) 80 tall menhirs and 3,000 alignment stones (1500-2000 BCE); alignment suggests astronomical significance; menhirs worshipped locally as Niluralla Thummappa or Goddess Yellamma; UNESCO Tentative List.

Economy

Primarily rural: agro-pastoralism. Diverse subsistence base rice, wheat, kodo millet, barley, lentil, black gram, horse gram, pigeon pea, Indian jujube; cattle dominant among animal remains followed by goat, buffalo, sheep, pig; hunting and fishing also practised.

Technology

Craftsmen specialised in pottery (a major component of grave goods), stonework (huge slabs cut from rock for dolmen construction), terracotta objects (cones, figurines, spindle-whorls). Iron was central 33 types of iron tools identified: celts/axes, flanged spades, arrowheads, daggers, tridents, swords, lances, spearheads, spikes, wedges, billhooks, sickles, hoes, chisels, horse-bits, knives, blades, lamps. Smelting furnaces at Naikund (Vidarbha) and large iron slag at Paiyampalli (Tamil Nadu). Megalithic culture ushered in the Iron Age in South India.

Social and Religious Features

Megaliths are usually found near sources of water, stone, and metal outside settlement areas. Collective burials suggest extended family or descent group organisation. Quality of grave construction, the massive labour required, and elaborate grave goods indicate a complex society with craft and technology specialisation and emerging chiefly authority ancestor worship could be a medium to claim and sustain power. Large number of weapons indicates constant warfare for control of economic resources. Grave goods indicate belief in life after death. Ethnographic parallels with Gond megalithic practice (Nuaparha, Odisha): belief in two souls life spirit (goes to bada devta) and shadow spirit (stays in village, watches moral behaviour, punishes transgressions).

South Indian vs Northeast Indian Megaliths

South Indian megaliths are overwhelmingly funerary; prehistoric and protohistoric (Iron Age); an extinct tradition; archaeologically rich with diverse burial typologies and iron weapons. Northeast Indian megaliths are primarily commemorative and ritual; range from prehistoric to historical; a living tradition today; linked to specific Tibeto-Burman and Austroasiatic tribal groups; strongly influenced by Southeast Asian cultures; focused on upright menhirs with fewer grave goods (the megalith itself is the wealth, representing the social capital of the erector). Common to both: use of large stone, communal effort, commemorative purpose, association with belief systems.
